Medical standards

  • Vision: corrected vision of 6/6 in both eyes is the standard across most categories; myopia limits vary by role.
  • Hearing: must be able to hear a forced whisper at a distance of 610 cm (6.1 m), each ear tested separately.
  • Dental: minimum 14 functional dental points, including at least 4 of 6 anterior and 6 of 10 posterior teeth per jaw.
  • Disqualifying conditions include chronic respiratory disease, tuberculosis, cardiac abnormalities, neurological disorders (including history of fits), and certain psychiatric conditions — assessed by authorised military medical officers against current regulations, which can differ from civilian medical standards.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT) qualification is mandatory for selection; specific event standards (run timing, etc.) are published with each recruitment notification rather than fixed permanently, so this page doesn't quote a specific number — check the current notification for the exact PFT standard.

After selection

Selected Agniveer MR candidates undergo 14 weeks of basic training at INS Chilika before professional training in their assigned trade; beyond specialised duties, MR recruits also receive small arms training and take part in ship operations, landing parties and boarding activities. Terms of engagement — 4-year tenure, retention odds, Seva Nidhi, insurance and ESM status — are the same structure across all three services; see Agniveer Corner for the full breakdown.
