Before you start: what MCO quota is (in brief)
Indian Railways sets aside a fixed number of berths, per class, on specific trains, for defence-related travel — the defence quota. The Movement Control Office (MCO) responsible for your departure station is the office that allocates these berths. It's not a discount and it's not automatic — you apply for it, and it's granted subject to what's actually available on your specific train.
What to have ready before you apply
- Proof of identity — your service ID card, or your Canteen (CSD) Smart Card or Dependent card if that's what you're carrying. Canteen and Dependent cards are commonly accepted for this purpose, but should be countersigned by your unit's Admin Authority before you submit them.
- A movement order or authority letter from your unit, if you're travelling on duty
- A copy of your ticket or PNR, if you already have one — many people book a regular ticket first (even waitlisted) and then approach the MCO to have it confirmed against the quota
- Your travel details decided in advance: train number/name, date of journey, boarding and destination station, class required, and number of passengers
- A filled MCO Quota application form — available at the MCO office, and increasingly accepted by email
